MYSTERY JAM MONDAY PART 242

Welcome to the 242nd edition of Phish.Net's Mystery Jam Monday, the easiest MJM of October. The MJM is pleased to introduce last week's and three-time MJM winner @FunkyCFunkyDo, who was so eager to try his hand at clip selection (despite not yet having achieved MJM Emeritus status), that he forewent his winning code from last week to pick this week's puzzle. Thus, the winner of MJM242 will receive two codes good for the MP3 downloads of any two shows, courtesy of our friends at LivePhish.com / Nugs.Net. To win, be the first person to identify the song and date of each of the two mystery jam clips, which are connected by a theme. Each person gets one guess – if no one guesses correctly, I will post a hint on Tuesday, after which each person gets one more guess before I reveal the correct answer on Wednesday around 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET. Good luck!

Answer: Congrats to @runlikecarini, who saw right through @FunkyCFunkyDo and his '03 addiction obsession (better word choice) to snag two codes in identifying the pair of Shoreline '03 masterpieces: 7/9/03 Bathtub Gin, and 7/10/03 DEGvided Sky. Though we hadn't yet met, Funky and I both attended these shows in our younger days (he was in high school; I had just graduated college) – in fact, I was at Funky's first four shows, and we've been at 20 of the same shows overall (and have met up at nearly every West Coast tour stop since Fall '14). Thanks to Funky for the fun but manageable MJM, and stay tuned on Monday when the MJM keeps it rolling and takes a small step up in difficulty.

PhreePhish Ok, how many people have 1 and are now mindless searching to no avail for the other one for the last 5 hours?

Taking a short break but I'll be back.

FunkyCFunkyDo Got one, eh? Stumped by the other one, you say?

I was convinced that everyone would recognize the Divided Sky clip right away, and that the Gin would confuse – guess I had it backwards. For folks that haven't heard these jams (and all of 7/9/03 really), seek them out!

FunkyCFunkyDo Good work @runlikecarini! This Divided Sky ventures into type1.75 territory - a very psychedelic experience that is unique solely to this Divided Sky! That Gin takes on about 4 distinct, separate jams within its 26-minute framework - the one in the clip being the uber funky, rhythm section extravaganza starting about 8 minutes into the song! Give the whole 7.9.03 show a listen if you are unfamiliar; one of the most sparkly gems of Summer 2003.

mickeyjoe86 I knew I had the Gin, but never would have guessed a Divided Sky. I even listened to the Hood and LxL from 7/8 thinking consecutive shows. I was fairly certain I had it wrong, but the bass line from the Charlotte Bowie sounds so close around the 8 min mark. Nice work @runlikecarini! and thanks to @funkycfunkydo

runlikecarini @mickeyjoe86 honestly I probably wouldn't have gotten this if you hadn't gotten the Gin. And I listened to that segment in the Bowie multiple times just to make sure because I couldn't tell at first. @Phreephish Once I started looking for the first clip I too immediately assumed Hood or Bowie. Realizing that searching for one of those may take awhile I then decided to crack the theme instead of the song. Since this week is the easiest of the month I figured the theme couldn't be that hard. I first decided to look at jams from July 9 in other years, thinking it could be @funkycfunkydo birthday or anniversary of first show. Quick search led me nowhere so then I thought other 2003 summer shows. First one I checked was the following night because I've thought of doing the same theme if I ever got a chance to host. I saw the 19 min and the jamchart on Divided and it was the first thing I checked.... and bam! Assist goes to mickeyjoe86 but sure glad I could finally win one of these things haha.

metawhy awesome one! who is making that trippy sound at the end of the Divided sky clip? I've heard it in other 2003 shows, like on 7-9-03 at the beginning of SASS. Is it Page on some keyboard?
